How Long Does a Hike Take? Naismith's Rule, Explained and Fixed

In 1892, Scottish mountaineer William Naismith wrote down a planning rule that hikers still use daily: allow one hour for every 3 miles (5 km) of distance, plus one hour for every 2,000 feet (600 m) of ascent. It survives because it is nearly arithmetic-free and roughly right for a fit walker on decent ground. It fails in predictable ways, and knowing the failure modes is what makes it useful.

Worked example

An 8-mile loop with 1,500 feet of gain: 8 ÷ 3 = 2.67 hours for distance, plus 1,500 ÷ 2,000 = 0.75 hours for climbing. Estimate: 3 hours 25 minutes of moving time.

Tranter's corrections, briefly

Tranter's tables adjust Naismith for fitness and fatigue: they start from how fast you can climb a benchmark hill (300 m of gain over 800 m distance) and then stretch estimates non-linearly as the day gets long. The insight worth keeping even without the tables: hour eight is slower than hour two, and plans that ignore fatigue put you descending in the dark. Treat the output as moving time and add your own break budget.

Rules of thumb worth memorizing

Three worked plans, start to finish

Plan A — family hike, 4 miles, 600 ft gain, relaxed 2.5 mph pace: distance 4 ÷ 2.5 = 1.6 hr; ascent (600 ÷ 2,000) × (3 ÷ 2.5) = 0.36 hr; moving total ~2 hours. Add generous break time for a family — call it 2:45 trailhead to trailhead, and start by 3 p.m. in summer to finish in daylight comfortably.

Plan B — fitness day, 11 miles, 2,800 ft, strong 3.5 mph hiker: 11 ÷ 3.5 = 3.14 hr; (2,800 ÷ 2,000) × (3 ÷ 3.5) = 1.2 hr; moving total ~4:20. Rocky ridge terrain in the middle third: add 20% to that section, plus 30 minutes of breaks — plan 5:15, and set a turnaround time at the summit accordingly.

Plan C — group of four, mixed abilities, 8 miles, 1,500 ft: plan at the slowest member's 2 mph: 8 ÷ 2 = 4 hr; (1,500 ÷ 2,000) × (3 ÷ 2) = 1.13 hr; moving total ~5:10, plus the longer regrouping breaks groups take — a 6:15 day. This is the calculation people skip, and it's why mixed groups so often finish in the dark: the group's time is not the average of its members.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 10 miles a long hike?

For most day hikers, yes — with typical elevation gain it's a 4–6 hour outing. For conditioned hikers it's routine. Judge hikes by time and gain, not distance alone: 10 flat miles is easier than 6 miles with 3,000 feet of climbing.

How accurate is Naismith's Rule?

Within about 15% for fit hikers on maintained trails in good conditions. Errors grow with rough terrain, steep descents, heavy loads, and long days — apply the corrections above and it becomes a reliable planning tool.

How fast do most people hike?

Typical sustained trail pace is 2–3 mph including terrain; 3.5+ mph on real trails with gain indicates strong fitness. GPS 'moving averages' flatter you by pausing when you stop.
